What’s the Difference Between a Live Edge and Plank Table Top?

We know that every restaurant has a unique sense of design and style, and we are proud to offer a plethora of table top options where you can play designer. A common question we get when customers are looking at our table tops is the difference between a live edge table and a plank table.

Both of these edge styles are available in a variety of wood species, finishes, and sizes to make them fit into any layout. So what makes these edge styles different from one another?

Live Edge Table Tops:

Give your dining tables a cohesive flow with a live edge style. This edge style puts off a very organic, dare we say, artsy look that is continued from table to table. These tables are meant to have a vintage look with the long edges showing a natural, eased edge that’s reminiscent of how a tree grows.

When choosing this table, you can select whether your live edge is up or down, each having a distinct look. If you buy a rectangular top, the live edge will be on the longer sides while the shorter ends will be cut in the plank style. Having the live edge only on two of the table’s four sides allows you to still put the plank sides together for larger parties. With how the boards are cut to make these tops, live edge tables cannot be made in round sizes.

Plank Edge Table Tops:

If a traditional look is more your restaurant’s aesthetic, plank edge tops never go out of style. This edge style describes the flat, 90° angled edges that can be butted up next to each other (in square and rectangular sizes) to accommodate bigger groups.

A plank table top can be made in square, rectangular, and round sizes, making it a little more versatile than live edge if you have a variety of table shapes that you want to match.

There is no right or wrong edge style to choose for restaurant tables; it’s all about what works the best for the restaurant’s design.
